WHO ARE WE?
We are a women-led network of architects, designers, and advocates in the National Capital Region, driving equity in the design industry locally and nationally. Through mentorship, advocacy, and community engagement, we empower women and underrepresented professionals to lead, connect, and thrive.
We envision a design culture where inclusivity shapes spaces and diversity is reflected in the communities we serve.
We are excited to be a part of a growing Building Equality in Architecture (BEA) Community across Canada. Other chapters include BEA Toronto (BEAT), BEA Atlantic (BEAA), BEA Prairies (BEAP), BEA North (BEAN), BEA Calgary (BEAC), and BEA West (BEAW).
Building Equality in Architecture – Capital Region (BEACAP) respectfully acknowledges that we live, work, and gather on the traditional, unceded territory of the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation, who have stewarded these lands and waterways since time immemorial. We are grateful to the Anishinàbe Algonquin Peoples for their ongoing care for this region and are honoured to share this land.
As professionals shaping the built environment, we recognize our responsibility to deepen our relationship to the land and to learn from the knowledge, traditions, and leadership of Indigenous Peoples.

I’m all about designing conversations that create change. A convener of people, ideas, and big plans, I’ve led national advocacy and policy work with the Canadian Institute of Planners and the RAIC—bringing creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking to these roles. With architecture degrees and a background in writing, I’ve championed equity, inclusion, and reconciliation across Canada’s design professions. Outside of work, you’ll find me listening to a true crime podcast, Earl Grey tea latte in hand, or chasing my two energetic boys. Fun fact: Prince Philip once told me never to hire a young architect. I smiled—awkwardly.

I am an architect and Partner with Dialog, currently leading our new Ottawa studio. Over the past 16 years, I have worked in firms in Montreal, Toronto, and now Eastern Ontario. During this time, I also had the privilege of taking on an executive role in a firm-wide Inclusion and Diversity initiative. This experience has given me valuable insights into the barriers and opportunities that women face in our profession and the processes that can be used to bring about broader engagement.
I strongly believe in the importance of advancing equity to strengthen our professional base through knowledge-sharing, fostering safe and inclusive environments, and the use of data-driven methodologies to steer change.

I am an architect at KWC Architects with over 10 years of experience and a member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals. My architectural experience includes local and international projects ranging from neighbourhood scale surveys to large adaptive reuse projects to new institutional buildings. Having served on the board of Heritage Ottawa, and multiple local advisory committees, I am a passionate advocate for preservation of our built environment and stories of communities. Outside of the office, I am an avid reader and podcast listener; I enjoy playing tennis or taking my paddle board on the water in the summer, or skiing in the winter.

I am an Intern Architect at Architecture49 and a part-time artist. I am passionate about Gender Equity in architecture as well as Accessibility, and I am a Rick Hansen Foundation Certified Professional. I attended Carleton University, where I completed my BAS in 2020 and M.Arch in 2023. Stemming from my interest in Feminism, my M.Arch thesis investigated Sexual Harassment and safety for women+ in outdoor public spaces in Ottawa. During my time at Carleton, I worked at the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) for 6 years as an HBIM Team Lead, worked part-time for the Architecture Action Lab, and as a Teaching Assistant.

Hi! I'm Gabrielle, an Intern Architect at Shean Architects. My background is in art and design, with a BA (Honors) in the History of Art, Design and Visual Culture from the University of Alberta and a M.Arch from Carleton University. I have also worked as a Research Assistant and Contract Instructor at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism. To date, my most fulfilling professional accomplishment has been the opportunity to assist with a rebuilding initiative in the remote town of Wupperthal, South Africa after a devastating fire destroyed 53 homes. After getting my architectural license, I plan to go back to school to study human rights law. It is my dream to establish an NGO which fights, advocates, and designs for underprivileged and underserved communities through the lens of the built environment.

I’m a researcher, writer, and marketing strategist passionate about advancing equity in architecture. With a PhD, M.Arch, and BAS from the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University, my work explores how architects use marketing to shape public identity and professional discourse. I’ve worked in the architecture field for 18+ years, and held leadership roles in practice, education, and communication, and co-organized a national symposium amplifying critical conversations in Canadian architecture. As part of BEACAP’s executive team, I want to help build inclusive platforms that connect people, elevate underrepresented voices, and support meaningful change in the design industry.

I'm an architectural graduate at KWC Architects, having completed my Bachelor of Architectural Studies in the Conservation and Sustainability stream at Carleton University in 2024. I’m passionate about design that supports social and environmental change, and I’m slowly working toward becoming a licensed architect. I'm inspired by the growing number of women role models at both KWC and within BEACAP, where I also serve as the point of contact for social media, website, and graphics. I love solo travel and continue to seek inspiration from the world around me as I begin my career in architecture—a field I’m proud and excited to be part of.

I’m an intern architect at KWC Architects and I’m excited to be part of BEACAP, where I hope to find and give support to those of us facing similar challenges and joys in this industry. I’m also an advocate for emerging professionals (EP) as part of the CIPA EP Leadership Team, the ICOMOS Canada EP Committee, the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP), and CIPA Heritage Documentation, serving on the Executive Committee since 2024. I’ve been trained in architecture, architectural history, and conservation from the University of Waterloo and Carleton University and I look forward to meeting others in our field.

As an architect licensed in Ontario, I’ve worked across multiple sectors with a focus on breathing new life into heritage buildings through adaptive reuse. I’m deeply committed to moving the profession toward greater inclusion, accountability, and environmental responsibility. Outside the studio, you’ll find me playing music or sports, or happily serving as my son’s chauffeur and cheerleader—roles that keep me grounded, energized, and inspired.

I graduated with a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Université de Montréal in 2014, following an unconventional academic path that included studies in philosophy, law, and communications. This diverse background has shaped the way I think and continues to inform my architectural practice with depth, nuance, and openness. I joined l’Atelier architectes in 2016. As the mother of three young children, including twin girls born on my 40th birthday, I strive to balance professional commitment and family life with intention and conviction. I firmly believe that architecture today must be agile, inventive, and deeply rooted in human realities. Although I am still in the early stages of my career, I move forward with the ambition to contribute to an architecture that leaves a tangible and lasting mark on people’s lives.

I’m an architect and urban designer with an M.Arch from Parsons School of Design, shaped by years of working in New York City’s dynamic neighborhoods. My work sits at the intersection of design, equity, and community—co-creating spaces that reflect local voices and everyday resilience. At Grain Collective, I’ve helped transform vacant lots into safe havens for the unhoused, reimagine public spaces to support women’s safety, and plan for climate-resilient neighborhoods. Now based in Ottawa, I’m inspired to build partnerships that nurture belonging, amplify lived experience, and advance community-led design across Canada’s urban landscapes.

Hi, my name is Jana! I’m a third year architecture student at Carleton and one of the event volunteer leads at BEACAP. I'm hoping to bring people together in various ways so they can feel seen, included and inspired, and mainly help other female architecture students feel like they belong in the architecture world. I’m also a photographer. I really enjoy street and building photography the most, but you’ll probably see me around taking photos at events. I also love hands-on projects, whether it’s casting, sculpting, or woodworking, and I’m excited to bring that into BEACAP. Maybe we’ll even create some fun and engaging projects, who knows!

I immigrated to Canada as a high school student, carrying with me the stories and influences of many cultures. That experience continues to shape my work as a registered architect and as a Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certified Professional (RHFAC), grounding my belief that inclusive, accessible design helps people feel seen and connected. I’m drawn to project management for its ability to bring clarity, collaboration, and shared purpose to complex work. Through BEACAP, I’m excited to uplift women and underrepresented emerging voices across the capital region and help strengthen a profession that truly reflects the vibrant communities it serves.

I am a partner with KWC Architects with over 20 years of experience in Ottawa and Toronto on a wide range of projects spanning from private homes to national historic projects like the Senate of Canada building. I was inspired, along with the other Advisory Board members, by the amazing work being done by BEAT and other chapters across the country to start a local chapter. I believe mentoring and connection are essential to supporting women in their architectural careers and am excited for BEACAP to create that opportunity locally.

I’m Kelly Koroluk, Managing Partner and Principal at KWC Architects in Ottawa. My core belief is that the best projects are built by the best teams. I strive to foster a workplace culture where every voice is heard, valued, and empowered. My goal is always to lead with empathy and integrity ensuring our collective expertise is channelled into impactful, user-centred design solutions. When I’m not focused on design and team leadership, you can find me with a hot tea in hand doing one of my many hobbies, be it reading a good book, knitting, glass fusing, or trying a new recipe.

I am an Architect and Associate at Moriyama Teshima Architects in Ottawa with experience on a diverse range of projects ranging from commercial mixed-use developments to institutional and civic buildings. Having served on the Executive Committee of the Women of Architecture Capital Region, which concluded in 2020, I was introduced to the incredible work of BEAT and BEA chapters across the country. I am thrilled with the launch of BEACAP and how we can foster a community to engage, inspire, and support women in our profession.

I am a registered architect in Quebec, but over the past two decades, I have mainly been involved in architectural education and research. I am currently Professor and Director at Carleton University's Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, working with a great group of faculty, instructors, staff, and students on expanding the boundaries of our discipline and always striving to make it more inclusive. As a scholar, teacher, and director, I approach architecture as a relational act and socio-environmental practice that carries great potential as well as responsibilities, and I am invested in architecture's broadest roles within society.

Born and raised in Ottawa in a trilingual home, Carleton alumna, I’ve had the privilege of watching this city grow and evolve—and feel fortunate to have contributed to its fabric for over 20 years. Whether through my work as an architect and partner at Moriyama Teshima Architects, my role on the Ottawa Urban Design Review Panel, or even the experience of building my own home with my husband, who’s also an architect, I believe that every gesture we make toward shaping our city and its built environment is meaningful. I am delighted to support our talented BEACAP community on its journey.
